Artist Statement
My work is an exploration of transcendence, color, movement, texture and creating a visual atmosphere. The vivd colors, matte vs metallic finishes, rough brush strokes and organic shapes in my work have become my visual language. I seek to find a balance between visual chaos and order in my work because it represents the basic human struggle since time began. I work with a mix of different mediums including enamel, ink, oils and pastels but backbone of my work is high quality acrylics. Painting intuitively, I really try not to pre-plan my work. Instead I choose to work in the mindset of an explorer or gardener. I let one stroke lead to the next in an organic manner, trying to literally stay in the moment, not worrying about the end results. I work until the canvas feels resolved. I know I'm done when the image feels honest-not perfect. Sometimes my work can be finished in a few days, but more often than not, it is a stand-off of sorts... that can go on for months and sometimes years. I begin a painting and then I step back and ask myself some questions, "Is it too sweet"? "Where is the tension?" "Is this resolved?" and above all-- "Is it honest?"
As lifelong lover of art in general, my chief inspiration comes from the great masters such as Matisse, Kandinsky and Klimt, as well as contemporary artist such s Wayne White, Miranda Skoczek, Lance+Letscher and Claire Desjardins.
In the vein of abstract expressionism, the challenge is trying to find something relevant, intriguing, and engaging that feels organic and true, much like coaxing the evolution of an entirely new animal among a herd of closely related species. The peacock and the rooster are related but they are entirely distinct. That process can not be faked or forced and requires much dedication, patience and curiosity.
In the spirit of generosity and peace, I have no desire to impose anything on my viewers. My abstract work is simply about saying "Yes" to what is simple, meaningful and true. My hope is that my work infuses the world with vibrance, energy, and hope.
